This Is What Exercise Machines Looked Like In 1865

Dr. Jonas Gustav Vilhelm Zander was a Swedish physician, orthopedist and the creator of the world’s first gym, opened in 1865 in Stockholm. He is also known as one of the originators of mechanotherapy and invented the world’s first (therapeutic) exercise machines.

His concept and machines were a great success and in 1911 there were more than 300 gyms around the world. In the vintage photographs below, taken in 1892, you can see some of his wonderfully weird, and frankly, terrifying looking creations. Have a look!
