A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems.
Green roofs like this have a number of advantages like: energy savings, it acts as an acoustic barrier, providing a more aesthetically pleasing landscape and it reduces the risk of flooding.
Obviously, the best part, though, is living like a real-life Hobbit!
