The art of tattooing goes back to ancient times, with evidence of tattoos dating back thousands of years ago. Ötzi the Iceman, a 3300 BC frozen mummy discovered in the Austrian-Italian alps, is covered with over 50 tattoos in the form of groups of lines and crosses. Unlike the needle we see being used today his tattoos were produced by means of fine incisions into which charcoal was rubbed. Ötzi’s tattoos are located at points that caused him great pain to wear during his life and it is thought that his tattoos were probably intended as therapeutic measures rather than as symbols.

Today, tattoos are more a way of expressing oneself and a major fashion craze. And, after Tribals, 3D tattoos are now rapidly becoming the new big thing in the tattoo world. These 3d tattoos are often so realistic that it is hard to believe that its really ink on someones skin. Obviously these sorts of tattoos are not to everyone’s taste, but it sure is amazing what tattoo artists can create and make it look so realistic with just a needle and some ink.
