The World’s Only Brown Panda, Bullied, And Abandoned By His Mother Is Finally Loved

Meet Qizai, a 7-year-old celebrity panda who is thought to be the only brown panda in the world. Qizai was found in a nature reserve in Qingling Mountains in Central China when he was only 2 months old. Abandoned by his mother, who was black and white, the cub was very weak and needed medical treatment. The researchers took him to a nearby wildlife rescue where he was fed on panda milk by the centre’s staff. Qizai did recover, but his childhood wasn’t easy as he was often bullied by other panda cubs – they would eat his bamboo because he was slower than them.

Luckily, now Qizai enjoys a good life at the Foping Panda Valley, Shaanxi province. The beautiful panda has his personal caretaker He Xin, a 26-year-old Foping native, who gets up at 6am in the morning every day and goes to bed after midnight just to make sure that Qizai gets all of his bamboo. He has been doing his job pretty well as Qizai now weighs more than 220 pounds and eats around 44 pounds of bamboo every day. He also lives in a separate enclosure, so he’s not bullied anymore either. Scientists guess that his brown coat might be a result of some gene mutation. They are planning to find him a mate in hopes of being able to observe the appearance of Qizai’s child and find the reason for his mysterious coat color.

“He is slower than the other pandas, but he is also cuter,” Xin said, describing the bear as a ‘gentle, funny and adorable’ animal

“All pandas here have names. When I call out their names, the other black-and-white pandas would react and come to me quickly, but for Qizai, it usually takes some time for him to realize that.”
